THE Jozi Kota Festival will be bringing kasi food to the Joburg CBD.
The festival will see 40 kotas stalls selling different food and will take place on 1 April at The Station in Newtown, Joburg.
Promoter Xolani Machele told SunBuzz how the event came about and what will happen on the day.
“What inspired the festival was when my partner Luvo Nimba looked at the fact that people in Jozi always want to eat kotas, but they are mostly sold in townships. We have varsity students from different parts of South Africa and have heard about this kasi cuisine and have always wanted to taste it.
“So, we decided it would be nice if we brought this food to them. When we started, we wanted to do it for students but now we’ve even attracted families,” he said.

Xolani said they have now created space and fun activities for kids.
“On the day, we’ll have the main stage for entrainment and have kota stalls. They will be ready as soon as we open. For the adults, we’ll have a food-eating competition and a dance floor. It will be a great platform.
“We’ll also have a stage for kids and a childminder so parents can have fun. We’ll have jumping castles, swimming pools and more activities. Another thing, we are creating a mini theatre. There will be magicians to entertain the kids. So, the kiddie's section will be fun,” said Xolani.
He said there will be surprise performances as well.
“We always book well-known artists, but the main focus is on the kota. We won’t announce the musicians for now. We don’t want people to come for the music, we want them to come for the food,” he said.
