Kwaito legends such as Mapaputsi, Mdu Masilela, Spikiri, Mzambiya, Nestum, Dremcko and Jakarumba will gather at the inaugural Kwaito Legends Festival to raise funds for fellow kwaito musician, Zola 7.
The Don’t Cry hitmaker has been getting donations from the people of Mzansi and now kwaito musicians also want to lend a helping hand.
They will be performing at the event at Bears Palace in Carolina, Mpumalanga on Saturday, 2 April.
Singer and radio presenter Nestum Nyakale told Daily Sun why they felt it was important to help Zola 7.
“It is so important for us as kwaito artists to support and help each other.
“No one is there for us, we are on our own. And knowing where we come from and how hard it was that time, we need to be there for each other,” said Nestum.

“Zola has done a lot for the country and kwaito. And for us as kwaito musicians to come together to celebrate and honour him while he’s still alive, it’s a great thing to do.”
She said this was special to her because she knew Zola before they were both famous.
“We used to represent our schools in public speaking. We would be the only two black people at the events and that’s how we started becoming friends,” she said.
Speaking about the event, Nestum said she wa happy kwaito musicians were being given a platform.
“You know I don’t want to lie, I am overwhelmed by this event. I think it’s about time kwaito is given attention again. People have been saying kwaito is dead, because we have amapiano and it has taken over.
“But we don’t have to compare the genres. We are the ancestors of amapiano,” she said.
Tickets cost between R200 and R2 000 at Computicket.
