WHILE fans of telenovela The River say goodbye to it next month, Mzansi Magic welcomes a new show to replace it.

The channel announced the birth of a new show that will delight South African telenovela lovers.

Champions will premiere on Mzansi Magic on Monday, 5 February.

According to Mzansi Magic, the upcoming show will feature A-list talent such as Sello Maake ka-Ncube, Tumisho Masha and Jo-anne Reyneke, and will introduce the exceptional duo of Rethabile Mohapi and Minkie Malatji.

"In a world where the turf is tough and the stakes are high, Sne Modise, played by Jo-anne Reyneke, is a symbol of resilience and ambition in a male-dominated soccer empire. Battling the storm caused by the sudden changes in her father Washington’s life, Sne Modise is thrown into a series of challenges, love and betrayal.

"As she struggles with the intense drama, Sne stands at the forefront as an outsider, determined to challenge gender norms and lead the Soshanguve Giants F.C. to success. But the question is: can she come out on top in an arena where the rules of the game are constantly changing?" the statement read.

Champions is produced by Tshedza Pictures, the production house behind TV hits such as The River, Outlaws, Adulting and Gqeberha: The Empire.

Executive producer Phathutshedzo Makwarela said Champions uniquely epitomises the spirit of South Africa.

"It is meant to inspire and excite our audience. It is a celebration of the ambition, positivity and resilience of our people. Tshedza Pictures is thrilled to be working with Mzansi Magic again and we look forward to the moment when our viewers will join us on this incredible journey," he said.

They said Sello Maake ka-Ncube will play the role of Washington Modise, a former player turned entrepreneur.

"Washington breathed life into his own soccer team Soshanguve Giants FC and steered it with a mix of shrewd business sense and a deep love for the game. His story is a captivating blend of ambition, challenge and the relentless pursuit of excellence," the statement read.

Kgomotso Christopher will play Lucinda Modise, Washington's wife.

"Her story is one of quiet strength, constant support and the influential role of a partner in the turbulent world of success and power," the statement read.
