Iconic Athol Fugard’s book My Children, My Africa is set to be retold in a new theatre play coming to the Soweto Theatre.
The book, published in 1990, is being used as a school setwork for grades 10 to 12 pupils.
Producer Dr Nobulali Dangazele spoke to SunBuzz about producing the play and what it’s about.
“It’s a matric setwork and it looks at themes of education.
“It’s about two students and a teacher who meet as rivals at a debate. They debate very important topics that are still very relevant to how we live as a society, our education, and also the effects of apartheid and how growing up in different geographical places has impacted our vision and the levels of exposure we have,” she said.
Dr Nobulali said they felt the Soweto Theatre was the perfect place for the play.
It starts on 16 August and will run until 20 August.

“We chose this play because it’s placed at township schools. Also, Jabulani is a township close and dear to me, as I grew up in Dlamini. That’s also where the theatre is. The themes in the play will be understood by the pupils and contextually as well.
“Hence we decided to choose Soweto Theatre because we want to show them reality, not fiction,” she said.
The actress’ company, Nobulali Productions, has also produced plays such as Animal Farm and Nothing But The Truth. She said they hoped pupils would learn from the play.
“We hope this will create a spark creatively and educationally, but also from an integrity side of things.
“People can expect a beautiful play and a post performance facilitation where the audience can ask the actors questions and engage with the actors about the play,” she said.
Tickets cost between R100 and R120 at Webtickets.
