THE man behind the world famous Madiba shirt collection is making a mark at the Paris and Milan fashion weeks.
Sonwabile Ndamase is among the top designers showcasing their work at the events between 23 and 29 September.
The 62-year-old, originally from Libode in the Eastern Cape, is the founder of Vukani Fashion and became globally known thanks to his unique styling of former president Nelson Mandela.

“Madiba shirts are now world- famous and to celebrate the man and the nation, Vukani proudly presents the Madiba Collection,” he said.
Sonwabile said he was honoured and proud to be representing South Africa on some of the world’s biggest runways.
“The audience are some of the biggest fashion contributors in the world, and for them to see my work will open so many doors for me and the many other South African designers that follow,” he said.
“It has always been a privilege to have had one of history’s iconic leaders make my collection known worldwide,” he said.
“I am humbled to have walked this path, and am truly grateful to the many South Africans who have supported me and made my brand a household name.”]

But he said he had to overcome some difficulties to get to the runways.
He said he was given a very short time frame to put together a collection that best represented Madiba shirts and had to add female options. “But we managed to overcome great odds and at the end, we came out with a successful collection that best represents our iconic Madiba shirts,” he said.
