TRIBUTES have been pouring in following the death of radio presenter, Lungiswa “Lulu” Haarmans.
The 41-year-old died after a short illness at Settler’s Hospital in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, on Thursday, 12 January.
Lulu, who was the host of Khanya Gqiyazana on Umhlobo Wenene FM, became a household name following her successful stint as the host of one of the biggest mid-morning radio shows in Mzansi.

Makana Mayor Yandiswa Vara said: “Lulu’s death is not just a loss for her fans but to the radio world in general. She has left a lasting legacy in the radio industry.”
She said the Makhanda-born radio star was a great inspiration to local presenters.
“Words can never be enough to fully express the sense of loss caused by the death of such a young and talented ambassador of our city,” said Vara.
“To the Haarmans family, please know our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult period.”
ANC provincial spokesman, Gift Ngqondi, said Lulu joined Cosas because of her conviction to free the downtrodden.
“We are saddened by her passing,” said Ngqondi.
Lulu studied at Walter Sisulu University and started her career as a newsreader in the late 90s with uBuntu Community Radio before she joined Radio Grahamstown.

“She was a constant presence in South African homes, tackling issues with charm, respect and an inclusive manner,” said Ngqondi.
“It was this ability to converse with and entertain all types of people that made Lulu a sought after public speaker and MC.”
In 2020, she joined the digital radio station, Keith Ngesi Radio in East London.
“Lulu was an icon of excellence and dedication. At the time of her passing, she was part of the newly opened Ilizwi FM. We hope the Haarmans family, friends and the broadcasting industry find solace in the knowledge that the whole nation shares their grief.”
