FAMILY, friends and fellow musicians of DJ Pencil celebrated his life at the memorial service on Thursday, 16 March.
The service was held at Mbolekwa Hall in Atteridgeville, Tshwane. The 40-year-old, whose real name was Samuel Moripe, died on Friday, 10 March, as a result of Leukemia.
He was known for his hit songs Suna Papa, Tshwara tshwara and Lefura.
Family representative Angelina Latakgomo told mourners that only God knows why He took him.
“We say that he died young, but only God knows his fate,” she said.
“In 2015, he was told he had of cancer. He went to three different doctors to check if it was true and it was confirmed that he had Leukemia.
“He had to started cancer treatment and it is a very expensive journey.”

Angelina said that Samuel, also known as Sammy, refused to give up on life.
His friend, Thabiso Mthimkulu, said: “Cancer has taken my brother, colleague and a friend. May his soul rest in peace.”
His sister, Dikeledi Mojapelo, said: “I spoke to him on Thursday and he said he was tired and can't live anymore and wanted to rest.
“I thought he just wanted to sleep, but I guess he meant death,” she said.
Many speakers said that they saw that he was sick but didn’t know what was wrong with him.
DJ Moscow Mosa said: “I remember when he was involved in a car accident, he called me and thanked me for the prayers because he did not die.”
Various artists whom Pencil featured performed their songs during the memorial.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, 18 March at Mbolekwa Hall and he'll be buried at Lotus Garden cemetery.
