THE 2023 edition of the IShashalazi Women's Theatre Festival is loading.

This event will take place from 31 August to 1 September at the KwaMashu Ekhaya Multi-Arts Centre in Durban, KZN.

Celebrated female theatre practitioners such as multi-award-winning poet Gcina Mhlophe, actress and Ukhozi FM presenter Zimiphi "Zimdola" Biyela, as well as Uzalo actress Samkelisiwe Sam Hlophe.

Baby Cele, Durban Gen actor Fanele Ntuli and actress Noxolo Mathula will be part of the event.

This festival is hosted during August which celebrates and honours women from all walks of life.

One of the key objectives of this festival is to give women a platform on which they share their stories and network.

"K-CAP started this festival by inviting women writers, actors and directors to demonstrate what the mind and role of a woman entails in modern society. Realising that most social ills against women usually happen in adolescence, K-CAP has consciously embedded seminars and empowerment workshops," said PR manager at KCap, Thobile Ximba.

She said the opening seminar takes place on Thursday, 31 August, and will be hosted by Zimdola.

"The topic for the opening seminar is, Ngiyimbali – My Body, My Pride, and Continuity. Another guest is Gogo Ka Magalela, who is originally from Zimbabwe, and she carries her Zimbabwean culture and wisdom. Gcina Mhlophe, who is also a playwright, director and performer, will also be joining the panel," said Thobile.

According to Thobile, the festival will be filled with knowledge and entertainment.

"Talented groups and solo artists will share the stage. The stage will be set alight by 10 women theatre groups from within and outside the province of KZN, reflecting on their interpretation of social cohesion, nation building, and Nelson Mandela Imbokodo Stories in honour of Women's Month," said Thobile.

The entire Ishashalazi 2023 programme will be live on K-CAP social media pages, K-CAP Ekhaya Multi Arts Centre on Facebook, and K-CAP on Instagram.
