DJ and architect DormantYouth is ready to change the locations of Joburg groove forever.
They are bringing together their love of music and architecture together to influence change.
DormantYouth, whose real name is Thelma Ndebele, will be showing their plans to bring these two worlds together this weekend by hosting Groove Biennale. The event will paint Alexandra red with performances by top DJs Lelowhatsgood, Pona, No Diggity, Danger Ingozi, Phatstoki and Rose Bonica.
DormantYouth, who classifies as non-binary, said to SunBuzz: “Groove Biennale is the fourth and final night embassy residency that has seen other ambassadors Unmuted, Other Village People and Kombonation creating bold new nightlife experiences at iconic spaces in Joburg and Soweto, with the support of Jägermeister.”
They added that it was their turn to make their mark.

“I will host music performances and exhibitions, and celebrate queer communities. The Groove Biennale is a curated series of underground parties branded as ‘The Ante Experience’. It is nested inside an architectural shell and meant for large-scale contemporary exhibitions.”
DormantYouth said the event is about showing the creative side of architecture.
“Groove Biennale is about exploring architectural forms, contextualised into the experience of music-based events at night,” they said.
“My collaborators and I are designing and building a modular scaffolding structure that is the biennale pavilion where all these parties will happen in, on, under and around.
“They include spatial practitioners, architects and researchers Izak Potgieter, Nothando Lunga, Dylan Fernandes and Gio Rech,” they added.
DormantYouth also holds a master’s degree from the University of Joburg, with their dissertation based on what they were doing now.
