GOSPEL singer Khulekani Chili has been recognised by the gospel music industry after going through tough times because of drugs and alcohol.

Khulekani, who won the Best Street Promotional Artist Award at the 9th Annual Independent National Gospel Music Awards (Ingoma) held at Greenstone, Joburg, on 27 August, said he still can’t believe that he has been acknowledged for his hard work.

The former drug and alcohol addict told Daily Sun: “I am happy about the award. This is a wonderful achievement and the first award after I decided to quit drugs.”

Khulekani went to Tranquility Rehab Centre in Joburg on 12 May 2020 to 16 July 2020 and he described the journey as a life-changing one.

The Ngenzeni hitmaker told Daily Sun that he spent much of his time praying and fasting.

“Finally, God has rewarded me for being faithful to him,” he added.

Although, the gospel singer was not expecting this to happen so soon, he said it will continue motivating him.

“I was happy to lift an award after what I went through, especially losing everything that I had because of drugs.

“My journey has not been rosy as cocaine almost ruined my life and career,” he said.

Khulekani said he lost everything, including his houses in Alberton and Benoni in Ekurhuleni, because of his addiction.

The singer who is based in Midrand, Joburg said that he never expected his comeback to be so smooth like as he thought that people will distance themselves from him and also judge him.

“People have been amazing, family, friends and followers are excited about my come back in the industry.” He added

He said some of his followers were lonely especially not seeing him on stage performing.

He said he also lost two cars, a Corsa Lite and VW Golf 7.

The gospel singer said besides his possessions, he lost his family and friends.

“I must say that I have been given a second chance and people can expect great things from me going forward,” he said.

He added that he is currently promoting his album titled, Ungumhlobo, which was released on 15 March.

On the award he won, he was competing with Paul K, Londiwe Sphe Nxumalo from Joyous Celebration, Amawele and Puleng March from Joyous Celebration when he won the Best Street Promotional Artist award.

He will be performing at the Sun City Gala Dinner at Sun City Superbowl on 22 October and at the Thank You Pain Night of Worship at Zoe Faith Tabernacle International Church at KwaMhlushwa, Mpumalanga, on 2 December 2022.
