FAMILY and friends sang and danced during the memorial service for the late gospel singer Dr Kenny Makweng.

Makweng died on Monday 15 January at Witbank Hospital.

The 54-year-old singer from Digwale in Mpumalanga was described as a great gospel singer.

The emotional memorial service took place on Friday 19 January at the Akasia Community Hall in Tshwane.

Deliwe Macheke (62), a gospel singer, sang as he celebrated the life of Kenny, whom he described as a great artist.

"He was so great, let's sing and remember him. He was a gospel singer and he loved singing," he said.

Gospel artist Conny Lamola said Kenny was a humble person and was loved by the people.

"I will always remember him. He trained a lot of artists who sing Sione music. He was gifted," she said.

She said he lived his life and didn't care what people said about him."He was a man of the people. May your soul rest in peace," she said.

The late gospel singer's sister, Mynah Makweng-Kolobe, said her brother loved the people.

"It was hard for me when I heard that my brother was sick. I visited him in hospital before he died. It was painful to receive the news from the hospital that my brother had died," she said.

She urged mourners to celebrate Kenny's life.

Paul K said: "The music was in him. I knew him very well. He didn't sing for the money and the fame. He sang out of a calling. He lived to sing."

His friend Sipho Molamudi said it was painful to hear this sad news.

"He always told me to go to school. Education was his top priority. I learnt a lot from him. He taught me that as a human being you should not harbour grudges," he said.

Family and friends described him as a genuinely loving person who cared about others.

Bancor Ramotebele said: "He raised me. I loved him so much. He gave me his last R40 and told me to go and work for my children," he said.

He leaves behind six siblings and other family members.The funeral service will be held in Digwale on Sunday, 21 January at 6am.

Makweng will be laid to rest at Keerom Cemetery in Limpopo on Sunday 21 January.
