FORMER Kaizer Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic, and Black Leopards defender Sphiwe "Dr Mnandi" Mkhonza has died at the age of 45.
In a statement, the family confirmed the death of the legendary footballer.
"The family of the former Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs defender Siphiwe Mkhonza confirms he sadly passed on in the early hours of this morning at home. Mkhonza, affectionately known as "Dr Mnandi' at his current employer, SABC, was suffering from kidney infection for a long time.
“He was admitted to Charlotte Maxeke a month ago and was released after showing signs of recovery. Mkhonza was being taken care of by his girlfriend and mother of his three children, Ms Nondumiso Masengemi, at their home in Roodepoort," the statement read.
The family thanked his former employer, SABC and colleagues for supporting him during his illness.
“Mkhonza is survived by his children, his father, Joseph ‘Skheshe Kheshe’ Mkhonza, his mum, Phindile Mkhonza, and his brother. The family will communicate further details regarding funeral arrangements," the statement concluded.
Mkhonza kicked off his career back in 1999 at Celtic.
He also played for SuperSport United and AmaZulu.

He won seven caps for the national team, Bafana Bafana.
Mkhonza became a football analyst at SABC after retiring from football in 2012 while playing for Black Leopards.
In posts on X from SuperSport and Lamontville Golden Arrows, the clubs have shared their heartfelt condolences to the former Bafana defender.
SuperSport tweeted: “Everyone at SuperSport United is saddened to learn of the passing of Siphiwe 'Dr Mnandi' Mkhonza ?? Our heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved family and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
“Lamontville Golden Arrows would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Siphiwe Mkhonza who passed away today. Rest in Peace "Dr Mandi," the club posted.
Award-winning sportscaster Carol Shabalala shared her condolences to the Mkhonza family.
“The football fraternity is reeling from the news of the passing of football legend Siphiwe Mkhonza. Thinking of family and friends during this difficult time," she tweeted.
