The Godfather of township theatre, Gibson Kente, will be remembered and commemorated by his proteges this weekend.
A group of people who were taught by the late playwright, composer, director and producer have put together five of his plays and will be showcasing them at Uncle Tom’s Community Centre in Orlando West, Soweto.
They have put together five of his best plays.
Kente died in 2004 after creating a name for himself as the father of township theatre.

Co-director Martin Koboakae spoke to SunBuzz about the show, titled How Long, Mfowethu?
“We used to work with Bra Gibs. He inspired a whole lot of artists in the country and the artists in this play are some of those people. We worked with him on projects and some shows, and he taught us a lot. We feel indebted to him because of the things he taught us and that is why we’ll be doing this show,” said Martin.
He said they’re trying to keep Kente’s name alive for generations to come.

“I scripted the show. We took five of Gibson’s most popular shows and fused them and that’s 70 minutes long. We now have this one big show,” said Martin.
The tickets are R60 at the centre.
