VISUALLY impaired DJ, producer and sound engineer Bongani Mbambo, popularly known as DJ Phobia, will be hosting his one-man show on 28 October.

The 38-year-old from Bethlehem in the Free State said he is what he is because of DJ Christos and Black Coffee, who both taught him how to DJ.

“It was an amazing experience, a dream come true. I was invited by Christos to the first South African music conference and stayed at his house for the duration. He then taught me how to DJ and it only took me 30 minutes to master the turntables,” he said.

He said he met Black Coffee in the same week.

“He also taught me a few things. I'm really grateful to these guys for everything. I got to play alongside, Christos, Black Coffee, Fresh, Shimza, Durban's Finest, Oskido, Glen Lewis, Ganyani, Rocco and the list goes on. So, they really impacted my career in a great way,” he said.

He said his dream is to become one of the best-known DJs in the world.

“I'm doing my one-man show at Thuthukani guesthouse in Bethlehem. I want to inspire people living with certain disabilities and anyone in general to show that nothing's impossible if you believe in yourself, follow your dreams, defy the odds and stay positive,” he said.

He said he will also be raising funds for other shows.

“This is going to be my first one-man show. The event is also a fundraiser for more shows to come like a three-day one I'll be doing at Frontier Inn and Casino on the 15th till the 17th of December,” he said.

He said that he is also working on his album which will be released in 2024.

“I played at all the South African music conference events and my best moments are when playing for 5 000 or more people and I hear them cheering to their favourite songs and some unknown. That keeps me going and rocking the dance floor more,” he said.
