COMEDIAN Justice Kubheka (38) has joined the growing list of educated artists.
On Tuesday, 23 May, he received his diploma in electrical power engineering from Durban University of Technology (DUT).
It took him 18 years to finish this diploma.
“I am proud of myself for finally obtaining this first qualification. I enrolled for a national diploma in electrical engineering: heavy current in 2004, but I couldn’t finish it on record time due to my booming comedy career,” he said.
“First time around, I was only left with my in-service training to graduate. At that time, I had already engaged myself in comedy. I became a professional standup comedian, and I ended up putting my studies on hold.
"A few years later, I realised that I needed to finish what I started at DUT. I did it for myself but more so for my kids. I want them to look back one day and say, ‘our father was not just an entertainer, but also a qualified engineer.”
Justice said the impact of Covid-19 in the entertainment industry made him realise the importance of having qualifications.

“During Covid-19, we had a problem as events were not happening. If you had nothing on paper, survival was tough. For this reason, I decided to go back to university to finish my studies,” he said.
“This qualification will not stop me from entertaining people. I will continue to advance in my academic career. At the graduation ceremony, I was inspired by those who received their master's degrees, and I want to study up to that level.
"But for now, I will start applying for jobs related to my qualification. The good thing is that the country is facing a load shedding crisis, so it seems Eskom does need me. It's either I go and help them tackle this problem or establish my own Eskom,” said Justice.
He revealed that, apart from being a comedian, people from his hometown, Thornville have high hopes that he will come up with solutions to address the electricity problem in their area.
