THE cause of death of late jazz star Thapelo Joseph Mofokeng has been revealed.
The family of the jazz maestro and actor has spoken about his last days on earth. The musician died on Monday, 22 January at the age of 74.
The legend's niece Matlakala Katane told Daily Sun her uncle suffered from a lung infection. The 62-year-old from Rockville in Soweto said her late uncle met his untimely death at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.
She said her family was shattered by his death.
"I will always remember him as a pillar and his death left a huge gap in the family. He was a lover of humanity, a born entertainer and a man of many talents. He was a man who always put others first and would ensure his family came first," she said.
"His passion for music took him to global stages, where he raised the flag of the country. He contributed immensely to the arts and was a member of the Meropa Cultural group which travelled to Japan and many countries. He was a great man."

Matlakala said he was also the founder of Ipi Ntombi. Mofokeng also appeared in different movies and did voiceover for the Lion King.
Matlakala said he nurtured young talents, including his late younger brother Shimmy Mofokeng, who was known for his role on the '80s TV show Mmampodi.
She said he taught her to always be humble and the world will do the honours.
Matlakala said as a family they will miss his yelling, his infectious smile and his wisdom that they never realised until you dig deep.
The musician's memorial service will take place at Christ the King Catholic Church in Orlando East, Soweto from 4pm on Thursday, 25 January.
