IT WAS a battle of the genres at Wits University Sports Grounds on Sunday, 24 July when hip-hop took on maskandi in the final of the Jammin 2 Soccer Top 4 Tournament.
The tournament, also known as the Celebrity Soccer Games, is organised by artists Big Zulu and maskandi star Khuzani Mpungose, where artists from various genres take on each other.
Hip-hop, maskandi, gqom and amapiano faced off in the semi-finals, with hip-hop and maskandi battling it out in the final.
The hip-hop team, led by Big Zulu, included Cassper Nyovest, AKA, Kwesta, Blxckie, Sjava, Gigi Lamayne, Donald, Junior Khanye, and Touchline. And the maskandi team, captained by Khuzani included Ngelo V, Ntwencane, Mzukulu, Njoko, Phumudzo Manenzhe, Reggie Ndlovu and Smirnoff.
The final proved to be an entertaining match before ending 1-0, with maskandi walking away with the trophy and R100 000.

All four teams received R25 000 for participating, and the hip-hop team took home an extra R50 000 for being runner-ups.
Khuzani said: “Thanks to the supporters and to the artists who came. This tournament is big now.”
Manenzhe said this was a great initiative. “It’s good that musicians saw that it is not that easy when you get in the field,” he said.
