IT WAS a battle of genres at the Wits University Sports Grounds when hip-hop took on maskandi at the finals of the Jammin 2 Soccer Top 4 Tournament.
The tournament, also known as the Celebrity Soccer Games, is an event organised by artists Big Zulu and Khuzani Mpungose, where artists from different music genres form teams to play against other genres.
South Africa’s biggest music genres, hip-hop, maskandi, gqom and amapiano, faced off in the semi-finals, with hip-hop and maskandi battling it out in the final.
The hip-hop team, led by Big Zulu, comprised of the likes of Cassper Nyovest, AKA, Kwesta, Blxckie, Sjava, Gigi Lamayne, Donald, Junior Khanye, and Touchline.
On the other hand, the maskandi team, captained by Khuzani, was made up of the likes of Ngelo V, Ntwencane, Mzukulu, Njoko, Phumudzo Manenzhe, Reggie Ndlovu, and Smirnoff.
The final proved to be an entertaining match, with celebs from both teams showcasing their soccer skills to the crowd. The game ended in 1-0, with maskandi walking away with the trophy and R100 000.

All four teams received R25 000 for participating and the hip-hop team took home an extra R50 000 for being runner-ups.
Speaking at the tournament, Khuzani said: “Thanks to the supporters and thanks to the artists who came. This tournament is big now.”
AKA said: “This year, we are also going to be doing it for Riky Rick. We’ve got legends in the building, former players and a beautiful atmosphere. It’s such an honour to be a part of this.”
Ngelo V said: “We had Riky Rick last year and unfortunately, he is not with us now. It’s not a small thing. There are so many brands together. Even music festivals don’t pull this many brands.”
Phumudzo said: “It’s such a great initiative. It’s good that the musicians saw that it is not that easy when you get in the field.”
