WORLD-FAMOUS, Grammy award-winning producer and DJ Nkosinathi “Black Coffee” Maphumulo has shared his opinion on local artists not growing their brands.
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, 10 August, he spoke about the importance of touring and investing in his brand.
He said usually, local DJs didn’t have a strategy to expand their brands into going international and, when he invited them to global gigs, they also didn’t have a plan of what to do from there.
Black Coffee said when DJs got gigs, they didn’t strategise, but rather bought expensive clothing.

“In the revenue they make, how much money are they spending on Balenciaga? Because they aren’t thinking as if it’s part of their earnings. They are like: Oh, we need to look fresh and keep going. But if you put all these numbers down and you say: ‘We did 60 gigs and in these, we made R20. We’ve spent R15 on the Balenciaga and R5 is our profit’. No one thinks like this in the township.”
Black Coffee said he was working on creating a company to create a touring structure for artists.
“When you look at structure, when it comes to gigs, most South African DJs and artists’ careers are dependent on tavern, bar and venue owners. You can’t have your career dependent on someone who owns a venue, may misuse their money and close the venue or do something weird like not having a liquor licence and then lose the venue. Yet, you are dependent on them. You are waiting for them to call you. What is your plan?”
