GAUTENG's biggest youth arts event, Basha Uhuru festival, returns on Saturday, 24 June. This time it's expanding beyond a once-off annual event to becoming an "always-on" programme.

The event returns for its 11th year. It attracts young people from diverse cultural backgrounds to the Constitution Hill in Braamfontein, Gauteng to commemorate youth month.

This year Basha Uhuru will open its doors to the Ngud' hitmaker Kwesta as the headliner for the event, among other local artists, including Ms Party, Boujeena, Brown Sugar, Lyndow Radebe, Mam'Thug, and Sweeter Brown.

"We are proud to host the 2023 Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival back at full scale as Conhill's flagship youth month Event," Constitution Hill CEO Dawn Robertson said.

According to Dawn, over the years, Basha Uhuru gave birth to The Creative Uprising, an always-on programme, including the Creative Hub that opened in 2020.

"Focused on development, collaboration and upskilling creatives, the hub's work will help to grow and support the creative economy in Gauteng," he said.

Speaking excitedly ahead of the much-anticipated festival, brand manager of Sol Beer Warrick Wyngaard commended their long-standing partnership with Basha Uhuru.

"This project not only supports youth development through multiple channels, but holds to Sol Beer's commitment to local creativity," Warrick said.

"We are incredibly excited to go on this journey together as we build the platform and really empower the Youth. Let us not forget the gathering on Saturday, 24 June and groove with a Sol. We are #LivefromtheSunnySide," he added.

The build-up to the much-anticipated festival on 24 June will see a weeklong conference expected on 21 to 23 June 2023

This is an opportunity for creatives and aspiring creatives to come together, be inspired, showcase their talents and feed their creativity.

"Each day has a particular creative focus offering masterclasses, panel discussions, workshops and dialogues.

"For the first time, people can choose to purchase tickets for each of the days or for the whole week, allowing them to select sessions more relevant to their interests," event public relations personnel Maria Mccloy said.
