TAKING African stories to the world is important for Kenyan director and filmmaker, Angela Wanjiku Wamai.
The editor-turned-filmmaker is currently in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where her film, Shimoni, is showing at the Red Sea International Film Festival.
It stars popular Kenyan actor Justin Mirichii as Geoffery, a man who just got out of prison.

Angela and Justin spoke to SunBuzz about the film and taking African stories internationally.
“It’s important as we’re people and have stories too. We need to tell our stories because I think for a long time our stories have been in the hands of others and sort of manipulated to serve certain causes,” said Angela.
“The stories told are not always bad but are always out of our hands. So, I think maybe we need to have Africans telling our own stories.”
In the film, Geoffery is trying to get back on his feet but nothing is going well for him.
“The film is about trauma, about the society we’ve created and how we’ve told men how they ought to be. It’s also about seeing yourself and your trauma,” she said.
Justin said he had to mentally prepare himself to play Geoffery.

“I spent time away from my family, which was a sacrifice, but it really helped me get into that space,” said Justin.
Angela told SunBuzz Shimoni will also launch in Mzansi soon.
