ACTOR Thapelo Mokoena welcomed spring by hosting the wine festival, Nero and Friends Wine Festival, in Joburg on Saturday, 9 September.

Sharing how he got into the wine business, Thapelo, who is also a businessman and part of the Bakoena Brand, told Daily Sun his relationship with the Bosman Family Vineyards started in 2016.

"We got together at their cellar to share in their presentation. They sat me down and presented to me this amazing grape that they had just licenced from Sicily.

"When I found out what the qualities of this grape were, it took my interest and I started seeing a chance that we could have something great together. They were very keen to work with me and to take this brand to the people," he said.

He said he chose wine as it one of our greatest exports as a country.

He said his favourite type of wine is the Nero varietal. "I'm in love with the grape type. Nothing beats a good sauvignon blanc in the sun," he said.

Thapelo added that he would love to see quality wine brands that come from our soil grow.

"I would like to see an environment or situation where wine is not intimidating to our black people and not seen as something that is for the elite, where wine can really be enjoyed as any other product of the African soil without intimidation, without classism," he said.
