FAMOUS South African actor and film producer, Kagiso Modupe, has been taking schoolkids to cinema to watch his new film, Thando.
The actor became a household name when he played the character Mangi Nyathi on the famous TV show, Scandal!. He has also received praise for starring and producing the film Losing Lerato, which has won numerous international awards.
With this initiative that has been going on for three months now, Kagiso said he has taken kids from 10 schools with more than 2 000 learners to date, giving them the cinema experience.
“There are schools that reach out to say they also need this. There are schools that we have a relationship with, others are recommended”, said Kagiso.

Thando was released last month. The film, directed by Kagiso, is about a teenager, Thando, who goes through issues that are faced by schoolkids. The young girl Akhona, played by Zikhona Bali, meets an old man who becomes her blesser and later on impregnates her. A video of her being bullied at school goes viral and she starts thinking about committing suicide. The cast also includes, Thembi Nyandeni famously known for her role on Isibaya as Mkabayi and Emzini Wezinsizwa veteran, Jerry Phelew.
“The film addresses the similar social ills they go through such as bullying, suicide, colourism and blessers”, said Kagiso about the film.
He noted that it’s more fulfilling for him than it is for the kids, to be able to provide them with such an experience. He said one can see it in the children’s faces how excited they are to be in a cinema and watch the movie.
