ACTOR, playwright, and director Khaya Ngema is celebrating 20 years of performing educational theatre for schools.
Khaya, who has appeared on Uzalo and Imbewu: The Seed, said they're starting their educational theatres early this year to teach matriculants as early as possible.
He said they will start their programmes on Tuesday, 30 January at the Bat Centre in Durban and then tour KZN and former matric pupils will perform in their projects.
Khaya from Verulam, north of Durban, told Daily Sun that in the 20 years he has been performing educational theatre, there has been more improvement for the matric pupils to understand their school literature books.
"At the Bat Centre we will be performing adaptations of matric from My Children, My Africa!, Impi yabo mdabu isethunjini, English short stories such as The class Act, A girl who can, Triumph in a voice of adversity and many more, accompanied by English poems such as Iversnaid, You Laughed You Laughed You Laughed and many more," he said.

Khaya said their initiative of adapting matric literature as plays was launched in 2004 and they have produced many productions such as Umthathe Uzala Umlotha, Romeo and Juliet, Ayinamhlabelo, When Rain Clouds Gather, Sounding Wings and many more.
He said these productions are performed with powerful dialogues, narration, miming, flashbacks and African songs adapted and directed by him.
"This year, the performances celebrate 20 years in the industry. Performances begin on 30 January and end on 8 February. They will be staged at Foderville Hall on February 12 and 13, Winterton Hall on February 14 and 15, Ladysmith Civic Centre on February 16, Eshowe Sunnydale Hall on February 19, Ulundi Multipurpose Hall on February 20 and 21, Nongong Hall on February 22 and 23. and 23 February at the Nongoma Multipurpose Hall, 26 and 27 February at the Nquthu V A Makhoba Hall, 28 February and 1 March at the Newcastle Richview Hall and in many other districts,” he said.
