RADIO presenter Zweli Mbhele has found himself in a pickle after his comments on the Israel vs Palestine conflict did not sit well with some of the listeners of his show on 947.

In his comments, Zweli attacked the state of Israel and also cast doubts on the credibility of the reporting by Al Jazeera and newspapers that he didn’t name.

As a result 947, which is part of Primedia Broadcasting, and Zweli each issued out  statements of apology in the middle of the night.

The popular presenter made comments that made some listeners feel uncomfortable and angry during his noon to 3pm show.

In the statement, Primedia Broadcasting CEO Lindile Xoko said they have a proud history as a provider of independent news.

"The station’s output includes comment and debate. Primedia Broadcasting embraces our Constitution and all it stands for, including free speech and free press, while acknowledging the importance of individual rights," Xoko said.

He said they understand that in times of crisis, emotions can run high as is the case with the outbreaks of violence in the Middle East.

"947 doesn't take sides on political issues and always strives to give coverage that is fair and balanced, all while presenting a wide variety of views," he said.

He said many listeners have responded to Zweli's "insensitive remarks" on air on Wednesday, 11 October.

"Primedia Broadcasting unreservedly apologises for these offensive remarks made by Zweli and will be engaging with him about his adhering to our core values going forward.

"Primedia Broadcasting is also engaging with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission in addressing the matter," Xoko said.

Zweli also apologised on his X and Instagram stories.

"Earlier today on Afternoons with Zweli, I made remarks regarding the need for balanced and factual reporting in respect of the conflict between Israel and Palestine," he said.

He continued: "At the outset, I'd like to unequivocally state that it was never my intention to upset, hurt or discriminate against anyone. On the contrary, my views were intended to point out the need to be mindful of unverified reporting within the media, especially during such times. In doing so, I attempted to maintain an uninflammatory tone given the nature of the show."

Zweli said his sentiments were not articulated as eloquently and sensitively as he intended.

“I unreservedly apologise. I don't condone violence in any shape or form from anyone, and I will continue to work hard to ensure that my show serves as a platform for inclusivity and serves as a safe space for everyone,” he said.
