THE family of Luyanda Mahlahla is devastated after he hanged himself while in hospital!

The 33-year-old man was admitted to Uitenhage Provincial Hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay after he was found running around in KwaNobuhle in the early hours of Friday morning.

His sister, Vuyokazi (35), said he had shown signs of mental illness.

His uncle, Sipho (60), said when he went to visit Luyanda on Monday afternoon, he was told that he had hanged himself from a burglar gate with a polo-neck jersey.

“I sat waiting on the benches for about an hour as nurses and doctors ran up and down the corridors. I was later told that Luyanda had committed suicide,” said Sipho.

Vuyokazi said after her uncle told her what happened, she rushed to the hospital.

“A nurse showed me where the incident happened. There was blood where he slept. When I asked the nurse how it happened as the burglar gate was very high, she said she had already knocked off and I could come back the next morning.”

When Vuyokazi returned on Tuesday, she said a doctor told her they had tried to save Luyanda after taking him down from the burglar gate.

“I told them Luyanda’s jersey was stretchy and I was not satisfied with their explanation.”

Police spokeswoman Gerda Swart said an inquest docket was opened.

Eastern Cape Health spokesman Siyanda Manana said he would comment as soon as he had more details.
