MZANSI SUV buyers have never had it so good!

Mitsubishi has launched an updated version of its evergreen ASX in South Africa while revising its cost structure to improve its affordability.

The ASX is now offered as a wallet-friendly SUV with prices that kick off at R359 995. It compares really well with entry-level versions of its competitors – Hyundai Creta: R354 900 and Kia Sportage: R386 665.

According to Mitsubishi, its new business strategy emphasises the value for money so they pushed its whole SUV range under the R500 000 mark.

The line-up of the compact SUV range – excluding the full-size SUVs in the range such as the Pajero and Pajero Sport – but including the ASX, Eclipse Cross and Outlander.

ASX gets Mitsubishi’s new dynamic shield design which makes it more closely resemble the Eclipse Cross and Outlander.

The ASX ES features

There is also now only one trim level available for the ASX – the ES – but buyers can choose between a manual gearbox or continuously-variable transmission (CVT).

Under the ASX’s bonnet is the familiar 2,0-litre petrol engine with a fuel economy that is a claimed average of 7,5 litres every 100km for both manual and CVT options.

The ASX have a 63-litre capacity tank and according to Mitsubishi, this translates into more than 800km of travel on a single tank.

It appears to have a wide range of features too – the ASX gets alloy wheels, daytime running lights and a panoramic glass roof as standard.

Other features include a multimedia system with a Bluetooth connection and a steering wheel with multi-function controls built in, a rearview camera, automatic but full air conditioning and electric windows.

The ASX is safe too thanks to seven airbags and the usual collection of safety systems such as ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution.

Another ASX highlight includes the boot space, which while it is normally 442 litres, it can easily be expanded into an enormous 1 193-litres loading area, simply by folding the seats forward.

The ASX is covered by Mitsubishi’s manufacturer’s warranty of three years or 100 000km and a five-year/90 000km service plan.
