THE FACTS

VUSI Sithole from Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, says he’s been working for three years.

He was injured at work and ended up losing his left thumb.

When he was discharged from hospital, he found his employer hadn’t reported the incident.

He wants to know what he can do if his employer refuses to report the accident.

ADVICE

When an employee is injured at work, the employer has to report the matter to the labour department within seven days of the accident.

If they fail to report the accident, they’re guilty of an offence and may be liable to pay the full amount of compensation.

The employee can report the matter at the department to claim compensation.
