Attitude determines altitude. This simply means that a person’s attitude determines the extent of one’s rise or fall.
According to the dictionary, attitude is one’s point of view, or a way of looking at things. Two people might face the same situation but react to it differently, according to their viewpoint.
One person is able to see opportunities in a problem while another might only see doom and consequently become depressed by the same situation.
The Bible (1, Samuel, 17) is full of real stories that demonstrate this reality. Scriptures tell us of the fight between the armies of Israel and the Philistines. These two armies faced each other for 40 days on the battleground. Among the armies of the Philistines there was man named Goliath who was a champion of war with an impressive track record.
He had never lost a battle and his accolades earned him trust from his army. He came forward to say to the army of Israel: “Give me a man who can fight with me; if he defeats me we all become your slaves but if I defeat him you become our slaves”.
This terrified the army of Israel, including King Saul.
Then there appeared a 17-year-old boy named David who had heard Goliath shouting and insulting the army of Israel and their God. David then said to the king of Israel, “Please allow me to fight this man”.
We all know the story of David and Goliath and how David ultimately killed Goliath. It is clear that what actually killed Goliath was David’s attitude. When everybody saw a problem in Goliath, David saw an opportunity.
