THE Zondo Commission has summoned the eThekwini Municipality to account for alleged corruption between 2008 and last year.

In the summons papers signed by commission secretary Bridgitte Shabalala and seen by the SunTeam, municipal manager Sipho Nzuza is ordered to hand documents over within 10 days.

According to the papers, the documents are in connection with irregular expenditure.

In the summons, Nzuza is warned that failure to hand over the documents is a criminal offence.

The commission is expected to probe why people named in a 2013 report by Manase and Associates were never held accountable.

The report found former mayor Obed Mlaba and former municipal manager Mike Sutcliffe had possibly been involved in irregular spending. It was also found that 10 councillors with companies did business with the municipality, which is against the law.

Municipal spokesman Msawakhe Mayisela confirmed that the city has been asked to submit documents to the commission.

He said the municipality was preparing to send them.
