THE Uthukela Municipality in KZN has asked residents not to link the murder of a worker to political killings in the province.
General worker Mbongeleni Sithole (35) was shot several times near his home in Roosboom, outside Ladysmith on Monday.
It’s believed Sithole was waiting for transport to work when two unknown men opened fire on him and fled the scene on foot.
Municipal spokesman Jabulani Mkhonza said Sithole had been working with the water and technical service department for seven years.
“It’s still too early to say what the motive was as cops are still investigating. I can confirm there is no fighting in the municipality that we are aware of,” he said.
Mkhonza said officials would visit the family this week to try and get more details around the incident.
“We pass our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues. We have lost one of our dedicated workers,” he said.
KZN police spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbhele confirmed a case of murder was being probed.
“On Monday, a 35-year-old man was allegedly shot by two unknown suspects. He had multiple gunshot wounds to the face and head. He was declared dead on the scene.”
