RESIDENTS of Browns Farm in Philippi woke up to a dead man on their street on Wednesday morning.

An unknown man believed to be in his 20s was found by people going to work in the morning.

Residents suspect the man was caught trying to break into a house. He was found on Colose Street.

Residents said they heard screams at about 1am but they were scared to go out. They knew something bad had happened.

They said they weren’t surprised to find a lifeless body on the street in the morning.

The man had a deep cut in his head and was still bleeding when the residents found him.

A resident who asked not to be named said she heard screams and dogs barking.

“I looked through my window and I saw people running. The man looked like he was asking for forgiveness. I heard loud bangs but I was too scared to go outside,” the resident said.

A man who identified himself as Bheku said thugs must know that if they are caught, they will be killed.

“We will take them one by one because they come here to harass us. If cops did their jobs and locked them up for life, none of this would have happened.

“We kill out of desperation because cops can’t help us and we have to protect ourselves and our belongings,” he said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said:

“An unknown man in his 20s was killed by a suspect in Colose Street in Browns Farm. It is alleged the dead man was seen running from the suspect who was chasing him. The motive is unknown and the suspect is still at large,” Traut said.

The police urges anyone who might have information to call Warrent Officer Lesley Louis at 021 380 600/380/3375 or 08600 10111.
