FOLLOWING the death of Iconic Motswako rapper HHP on Wednesday afternoon, depression has become a big talking point among South Africans.

The late HHP, real name Jabulani Tsambo is reported to have taken his own life after a battle with depression.

The 38 year-old had previously opened up about his struggles with the illness which led to multiple failed suicide attempts.

The sad news of his passing have sparked a conversation about depression, which according to the World Health Organization, is at an all-time high worldwide.

Sadly in Mzansi, depression is not considered a public health priority, despite a number of people falling short in their respective battle with the illness.

Radio and TV personality Gareth Cliff urged people struggling with the illness to seek help before it is too late.

“If you’re dealing with depression, stress, anxiety and demons, you’re not alone,” he said, “there are people who can help.

“There are people who care - and this is coming from someone who doesn’t have the best EQ - don’t give up.”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines depression as a “medical illness which affects one’s mood, body, thoughts and feelings.”

A scary statistic from the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) indicates that 20% of all South Africans will experience a depressive disorder at least once during their lifetime – leading to an increased suicide rate.

Adding his voice on the subject of depression, legendary Kwaito and House music producer, Oskido said the illness does not discriminate.

“Depression can occur to anyone, at any age, and to people of any race or ethnic group,” he wrote on social media.

“You aren't alone, and what you are experiencing is real, valid, and recovery is possible.”
