TRIBUTES are pouring in for former Ukhozi FM station manager and veteran broadcaster, Welcome “Bhodloza” Nzimande.
The 74-year-old former SABC1 Ezodumo presenter died on Friday after a short illness.
He has been hailed as a hero in developing radio and traditional music.
He increased Ukhozi’s listenership from about three million to about six million in 2006.
Bhodloza was one of a few people who got recognition for his work while he still was alive. He was conferred with an honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Visual and Performing Arts by the Durban University of Technology in 2018.
Legendary maskandi artist Phuzekhemisi Mnyandu told Daily Sun Bhodloza loved unity in the music industry.
“When we competed with Ihhashi Elimhlophe and the late Mfaz’Omnyama Khumalo, Bhodloza told us our praise names looked like we were attacking each other. In 1987, he suggested we form a trio called Isxaxambiji to show unity in the music industry,” he said.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo leader Sibongiseni Shabalala said Bhodloza played a big role in developing their group.
“We travelled overseas and scooped Grammy Awards because of him,” he said.
Family spokesman Zama Nomnganga told Daily Sun Bhodloza will be buried on Wednesday, and they would confirm the venue and time.
