SHE has always been passionate about writing from a very young age.
Today, Thembi Ntahane kaMahlangu (24) is a published author.
Thembi from Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga said she has written and published three books.
Her first book, He Saw the Storm, was published in August last year.
“The book advises women that a child from a previous relationship must remain with their maternal grandparents when the mother marries. In the book, I am trying to show how kids, especially girls, get abused by their stepfathers,” she said.
In the book, one of the characters, Nomthi, was raped by her stepdad while her mum was ill.
Her mum eventually died and the stepdad married her as she was already pregnant.
The stepdad then became abusive. Thembi’s second book, Chasing The Light, is a collection of poems and it was published in January. She said she was inspired by her journey with depression.

“I had depressive episodes when I was in matric. I didn’t know it was depression until I was in my third year at varsity. I was not coping with my studies, so I went to therapy on campus and I was diagnosed with depression.
“I then started writing poems to deal with my depression,” she said.
Thembi told Daily Sun she realised that many people were suffering and had no one to talk to. She published the second book to show them they were not alone.
Her third book, After The Flames, is a continuation of the first one and was published in July.
“Nomthi couldn’t take the abuse anymore. She killed her husband and was arrested,” she said.
Thembi is working on distributing her books to bookstores, but they’re also available online.
