AFTER only a week in office, newly-crowned Miss SA Lalela Mswane means business – in the real sense of the word!

Lalela plans to tackle unemployment through teaching young kids entrepreneurial skills by using smartphones.

On her first public engagement, she visited Malapa Motsetse Foundation Primary School in Westbury, Joburg on Friday, 22 October.

“I aim to share entrepreneurial skills with kids at school because entrepreneurship is something young people don’t talk about.

“Kids need to know that these things are at their fingertips,” she said.

She said kids should be empowered to believe in the power of entrepreneurship.

She believes it is now her duty as Miss South Africa to start the conversation about unemployment among the youth and seek meaningful solutions, which will have long-lasting effects.

“My campaign aims to support young people to help them create their own employment opportunities by means of entrepreneurial skills and through that empowering them to be self-sufficient and to secure their own economic futures.

“I realised it’s a big challenge because I know unemployment is a complicated issue,” Lalela said.

She said action towards its reduction is necessary now more than ever.

“Let’s create sustainable entrepreneurial opportunities and take ownership of our own futures.”

Lalela said the youth needed the right skills to meet the changing needs of our world.

“The STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are the most important of all.

“I have made fighting unemployment the cornerstone of all the causes I care for,” she said.

“It does not only affect our youth but it is the source of many of the social ills so common in South Africa.”
