AFTER 20 years on radio and TV, DJ Sbu is calling it a day.

The Massiv Metro founder is retiring from the airwaves.

He worked at YFM, Metro FM and Ukhozi FM before founding Massiv Metro. He’ll now focus on behind-the-scenes work.

The DJ, whose real name is Sbusiso Leope, said: “My career has come full circle. It’s 20 years old. I’ve outdone myself.

“I didn’t think I’d go this far. I’m stepping away from the mic to focus on mentoring new talent.”

The DJ recently broke the record for the world’s longest radio show because “he wanted to go out with a bang”.

“This was my way of challenging myself and my team.

“I wanted to go out with a big achievement and thought what better way than a world record. We also used it to raise funds.

“We raised money for a homeless shelter in Tembisa in Ekurhuleni called Siyazigabisa Home of Hope.

“We did 216 hours on radio, which is about nine days of non-stop music radio.

“It was a challenging experience even though we had been practising.”

DJ Sbu is going back to music and starting another record label, Homegrown Music. He previously co-owned TS Records.

“I’ll be exploring things I haven’t done in music before. I had a successful career but the era has changed. I did music before social media and the Internet were bad. Now it’s a new generation and times. The first project is my album Home Coming: The African Odyssey, that I dropped two weeks ago.”
