Gregory “Greg” Maqoma’s Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Bolerois finally going to be on stage after being postponed multiple times this year.

The dance piece will take place from 28 January to 6 February at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein.

CION: Requiem of Ravel’s Bolero will have 18 dancers dancing to the harmonies of the award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir.

Lead dancer Greg said told SunBuzz: “This piece was inspired by a character called Toloki in author Zakes Mda’s novels Cion and Ways of Dying.

“Toloki was a professional mourner, and we have become professional mourners too. With Covid-19, death has become a part of us. Every week, we bury the people we love.”

He said people would remember those they lost when watching the show.

“The play is focusing on the atrocities of death. We want to allow the souls of those who have departed to find a transition to the next life,” he said.

Greg said they were hoping that people could let go of what they needed to through the play.

“People will get a moment to reflect on death and the ones who left untimely, as well as create a sense of hope.

“The work is about creating a space where humanity can prevail again and society can allow our spirits to find a moment of healing from the hurt.”

He said they were excited about finally being on stage.

“The spike in numbers and new variants have been changing things and affecting our plans. We are grateful that the show is finally happening.

“We kept postponing because we wanted many people to see it. The production is huge, and it wasn’t going to make sense to show it to a smaller audience.”

Tickets cost R200 at Webtickets.
