Behind every radio show is a content producer who steers its vision.
SunBuzz recently had the opportunity to chat to Thato Mokhotsoa, the woman behind one of the biggest shows on Kaya 959, The Best T In The City, hosted by renowned broadcaster Thabo Mokwele.
She said she was nervous when tasked with producing the show.
“But, I quickly found my feet as I had no time to dwell in my nervousness, especially when you have to produce a show for such a legendary broadcaster. I took it as a learning experience and now, I breathe and live the show,” she said.
The 29-year-old producer said she started working at the station in 2016 as an intern in the sports department.
Thato, who studied journalism at Boston City Campus, had hopes of one day becoming a sports presenter.
“I then realised I don’t have the voice for radio, but that did not stop me. I started exploring content producing and never looked back.
“It has been a journey filled with lessons and a lot of happy moments.”
Sebokeng-born Thato said news awareness was important when producing content, which was key to making a great show.
“You need to be very mindful of what is happening around you as everything can be content. But it is important not to overly rely on social media, and remain open-minded while also able to think outside the box,” she said.

Thato admitted that she did encounter problems when producing a show.
“Sometimes there is no content. That is where thinking outside the box comes in as you have to find content that will resonate with people. You have to find something that is light-hearted to shift people’s mindset as a lot has been happening recently. And to my advantage, my presenter does help as we have a great working relationship.”
Thato told SunBuzz that her love for radio was highly inspired by radio station YFM.
“I grew up listening to the station, which has been a huge influence in my life. It has shaped my career into what it is today, and influenced my love for radio,” she said.
The producer, who also has a love for management, shared that one day she hoped to open her own management company.
“I have no plans of leaving radio anytime soon, but one day I would like to open my own company.
“This will help establish and launch the careers of the next generation, as I believe I have great people skills,” said Thato.
