WHILE anyone can plan a wedding, Wendy Kona said that there are some facts people need to know.
Wedding planning is hard work
Wedding and event planners often work long hours to meet clients and co-ordinate the events.
Your clients usually have a nine-to-five job and will expect to meet and talk with you after work and on the weekends during the wedding planning process.
Many weddings happen over weekends and this will keep you busy when most of your friends and family may be relaxing and enjoying the weekend.
This is a seasonal job – wedding planners only get busy during the warmer seasons of the year so you’ll need creative ideas to help you survive those quiet days.
What qualifications are needed?
Apart from your regular business paperwork and licences, there are no required certificates needed to plan weddings in Mzansi.
First think what experience do you have in event planning: did you plan events at your job, church or at home? All experience will help you get started.
The education options are endless! You can attend wedding planning classes, business management, events management and project management classes.
Are you willing to learn?
Weddings are now more personal and that means that new ideas and themes emerge every day.
You must aim to deliver beyond your clients’ expectations without changing their personal wishes, which can be a difficult task.
