DESPITE competing in the gruelling Rio Olympics marathon only weeks ago, Rutendo Nyahora easily powered through the Pretoria leg of the Spar Women’s 10km Challenge to win Saturday’s race.
Nyahora said she had to defend the Pretoria title she won last year.
The Nedbank AC athlete won the race in 35:25 with Lebo Phalula second in 35:40 and Glenrose Xaba third a minute later.
The five-legged competition only has the Joburg leg of the race left, with the Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth races completed earlier this year.
The Zimbabwean led the race at the start and pushed hard from the 8km mark to win after losing her lead in the middle portion of her run.
Said Nyahora: “I was excited to win the race and defend my title.”
Phalula said she was satisfied to get a podium finish to help her accumulate points for the Grand Prix leader board.
- Meanwhile, Gauteng MEC for Sport and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko, has called on corporate companies to provide more support to sportswomen.
Mazibuko was speaking at the Gauteng Women in Sport Dialogue at the Turffontein race course in Joburg, on Saturday.
She said: “We need to empower young women to view sport as a profitable career.”
