CHIPPA United fought tooth and nail in their quest to suck three points out of Cape Town City FC in yesterday’s DStv Premiership clash at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London.
However, the visitors can only blame themselves for having left the Eastern Cape province with just a point in the bag after having created tons of goal scoring chances, but the Chilli Boys were resolute for a 0-0 draw.
Actually, there isn’t much to write home about from this duel that was marred by missed opportunities in the cloudy and drizzling East London.
Thabo Nodada, Aubrey Ngoma, Justin Shonga and Fagrie Lakay could have found the back of the net respectively, but they either shot wide or just lost possession when it mattered the most.
Ngoma, who rejoined City from Mamelodi Sundowns at the beginning of the season, made his first appearance of the campaign, leading the attack alongside Shonga.
The result means the Citizens remain at seventh spot on the Premiership standings, while coach Dan Malesela’s Chippa remain 12th with 16 points after 17 games.
City have now played five matches without a win.
It was the second match in a space of three days between the two sides following their Nedbank Cup last-16 encounter, which Chippa won after extra-time.
This was the first goalless draw between these two sides in their last 10 meetings since 2016.
The Citizens made five changes from the cup loss against the same opposition, with Mpho Makola, Thamsanqa Mkhize, Shonga, and Ioannis Potouridis all recalled alongside a rare start for Ngoma, while the Chilli Boys brought back Kurt Lentjies.
Ramasimong Maloisane, who came in as a substitute for Chippa, should have buried the game in the dying minutes after going clear on goal inside the box, but his shot was delayed and went off the mark for the sides to settle for a point apiece.
