NKANDLA Municipality blesses residents with goats.

Nine co-operatives have each received 10 goats from the municipality to start the goat business.

On Wednesday, 17 April, a SMMEs and cooperative support programme, led by Mayor Mbhekiseni Biyela, was held at Nkandla Indoor Sports Centre where other SMMEs and cooperatives were also supported.

One of the beneficiaries, Mzikayifani Majola (52) of Mabengela Cooperatives, told Daily Sun that goat farming will help them earn a living.

"It's difficult because I am 52 years old, and no one is willing to employ me because of my age since I lost my job as a forklift driver in 2002. I think we can survive and make a living from these co-operatives as goat farmers," he said.

He said goats are in high demand in the community and they'll capitalise on that.

"Many people perform rituals with goats, even izangoma use goats for their rituals, so they're our customers. We want to sell goats to them and at the same time push the boundaries by selling goat meat in shops like normal meat or even selling it in overseas markets," Mzikayifani said.

Mayor Biyela told Daily Sun that he'll ensure that the cooperatives honour their promise to stay in business.

"We don't expect them to use the goats for their own rituals, but it is for their business. We want them to come to the international market with goat meat.

"We don’t want our people to look for jobs during this time, but it is the time for them to build their business. We mainly support the youth, but that doesn’t mean we don't support someone who is older and asking for help," Biyela said.
