Opel’s Mokka X has everything that made the earlier Mokka so appealing to buyers but now it has more to give.

Opel’s compact SUV gets a pre-Christmas makeover, and part of the update is a name change: it’s now called the Mokka X.

The X in the latest Mokka’s name change is part of the new global rebranding for future Opel SUVs and crossover vehicles.

It is also the 13th upgraded Opel to be launched in SA since 2012 and is rivalling the Nissan Qashqai and Honda H-RV.

Since Opel introduced the earlier version here in 2015, the carmaker has sold almost 3 000 Mokkas locally.

Aimed at drivers who are looking for a vehicle that is safe, family-oriented and powerful, the Mokka X merges functionality, connectivity, technology and safety in a vehicle which is just 4,28m from bumper to bumper.

Though this compact SUV’s profile is still the same, there are major design changes all around such as new headlight clusters that combine daytime running lamps and LED technology.

The mechanics remain unchanged along with the four vehicle line-ups of Enjoy and Cosmo versions, which are available with either manual or automatic gearbox.

Powering all four versions is Opel’s proven 1,4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged Ecotec petrol engine.

According to the German carmaker, the two versions with the six-speed manual gearbox, push the SUV from zero to 100km/h in 9,8 seconds until it reaches a top speed of 196km/h.

For the two versions with the six-speed automatic gearboxes, the Mokka X moves from zero to 100km/h in 10,7 seconds with a top speed of 191km/h.

Average fuel economy ranges between is 5,9 litres and 6,2 litres every 100km depending on gearbox.

Interior trim has changed too with the upholstery fabrics and a more modern dashboard mimicking that of the new Astra.

Naturally, the Mokka X comes with a choice of high-tech infotainment systems too.

The range-topping Cosmo version boasts a high-end infotainment system – a connectivity package that is compatible with a wide range of media platforms – but a USB connection is offered as an option on the Enjoy.

While all the winning design elements remain unchanged, the update to the whole range will help it to remain popular.

Its compact packaging with clever proportions along with the high seating position, extra space, usefulness and go-anywhere nature should make the Mokka X a popular choice.

All new Mokka Xs are backed by Opel Complete Care with a comprehensive five-year/120 000km warranty and a five-year/90 000km service plan with service intervals every 15 000km.
