What colour should the smoke be?
Diesel or petrol exhaust gases should be colourless. Any smoke blowing out of an exhaust means that it the engine is malfunctioning and needs to be taken for a check-up immediately.
What does the colour of the smoke mean?
- Black smoke is a sign of an engine over-fuelling. This can be a broken injector, a restricted air supply or clogged intercooler.
- Blue smoke is created by an engine’s lubricating oil burning off. It could mean worn piston rings, valve guides or seals.
- White smoke is a sign of water vapour or heated but unburnt fuel.
