MANY SOCIAL clubs are formed for the same reason: to generate cash.
But Tladistad Jazz Club from Hammanskraal, north of Tshwane, is different.
All its members love jazz and most of them are over 40 years of age.
Chairman Steve Chauke, spoke to SunStokvel: “We have a two-hour meeting every two weeks at selected venues. Afterwards, we enjoy food, drinks and music.
“We may only play jazz but we do listen to deep, smooth, Latin, contemporary and other kinds too. We think it is important to promote awareness of this music genre.
“Besides giving us smooth tunes, we also hope to inspire others to become jazz singers, dancers or producers. For this reason we invite other jazz clubs, from surrounding villages, to join us,” Steve said.
Members can contribute R400 or more if they choose to. They also support the meeting’s host by buying meals and drinks.
Like most clubs the money they contribute goes into their savings account and is only shared at the end of the year.
While the club is only 12 months old, not only did they survive the first year but they have also added some new features such as a new monthly contribution for R300 from each member which is given to the host.
Steve said their biggest achievement so far is that they reached the festive season without breaking apart. So they honoured some members and friends with awards which included the best dresser, best supporter and best dancer.
He also said that with the popularity of their awards ceremony, they hope to attract more people to visit their events in the hope that some will ask to join the club as proper members.
“Today, our membership has grown from seven members to 13, and we’re still looking for new people to join us.”
