DOES cutting down on calories mean skipping meals?

Although it can be a struggle to cut calories during the day, skipping breakfast is a big NO, because it starts your day and sets energy levels.

“You may feel like you are cutting down on calories, but instead you are cutting down on important nutrients your body needs and causing more harm than good in the process,” said Planet Fitness and Smart Healthcare dietitian Daniela Venier.

Here’s how a simple breakfast can save your day:

Maintain energy levels

Breakfast foods are full of healthy carbohydrates and fibre which provide you with great energy in the morning.

Prevent cravings

Skipping breakfast will lead to you nibbling during the day, usually on unhealthy snacks. Waiting too long before you eat can make you feel peckish and lead to unhealthy meal choices.

Burn calories

Spreading your food intake out over the course of the day helps keep the metabolism working at a healthy pace and keeps you on the go. Skipping breakfast slows down your metabolism which also slows down the pace at which your body burns calories.

Keep up your sugar levels

Your body’s sugar levels drop during the night and skipping breakfast makes your blood sugar drop even lower, leaving you sluggish and hungry.

Boost concentration

Breakfast helps recharge your energy levels, so skipping it can lead to you being unable to concentrate throughout the day.

Lower cholesterol levels

A nutritious breakfast to kick-start the day will help lower your trans-fat and cholesterol levels.
