A SCHOOL without a functioning library is not a school . . .
This is why Adolph Schauder Primary School in Schauderville, Port Elizabeth, celebrated when they received a library stocked with books and refurbished toilet facilities!
The donations came from Oxford Books and General Motors South Africa (GMSA) employees in celebrating Mandela Day.
Gishma Johnson, corporate communications and public relations manager at GMSA, said their company’s corporate social responsibility programme was fully aimed at improving the quality of Mzansi’s education.
As a project of the company’s Adopt-a-School programme, employees and retirees rolled up their sleeves to unveil the new facilities as well as teaching grade R pupils arts and crafts on the day.
“Our 67 Minutes for Mandela gave us an opportunity to involve our employees and their families in the projects, and to witness the initiatives already undertaken by the company in the school,” said Gishma.
Over 100 employees and their families volunteered their time at the school to make sure that the kids have a good future.
Thomas Matthews, principal at Adolph Schauder Primary School, said he was overjoyed with the donation.
“The renovations and improvements add a sense of value and pride to our pupils and teachers.
“GMSA’s generous efforts will make a huge positive impact on the many pupils who will pass through the school in years to come,” said Thomas.
In addition to the library and toilet initiative at the school, GMSA also donated 67 blankets to Missionvale Care Centre as well as 120 soccer balls to the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s United in Sport Mandela Day project.
