UNDERDOGS FRUSTRATE ELEPHANTS!

IVORY Coast coach Michel Dussuyer attributed his side’s mediocre performance against Togo on Monday to a lack of mobility.

The Elephants were favourites going into the opening Group C game, especially with the inclusion of Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha and availability of Jonathan Kodjia, Franck Kessie and Salomon Kalou.

Togo played a very organised and disciplined 4-4-2 formation with forward Laba Kodjo Fo-Doh dropping deep to help out the midfield on defence to further frustrate the Ivorians.

Togo coach Claude Le Roy opted to field striker Serge Gakpe as a right back and his effectiveness was key in slowing down Ivory Coast’s attack that was often orchestrated by Kalou on the left wing.

“There was no quality and we lacked mobility. This was the main reason for our disappointment this evening.

“Throughout the match, it was not easy for us. Our technique was lacking too,” Dussuyer lamented after the game.

“It was very hot and we had no rhythm to destabilise Togo, who were well prepared.

“Our expectation was to assert our game plan but we had no solution today.

“Togo were well organised and it complicated our strategy. My players were unable to make three passes. There was no collective action. We are not satisfied at all.”

Ivory Coast face DR Congo in their next Group C tie on 20 January at Stade d’Oyem before taking on Morocco on January 24 at the same venue.

Le Roy admitted that as underdogs his team had an impressive result, especially against a top quality side like Ivory Coast.

“We qualified for Afcon as the 16th team. We did what it takes to win the match but we’re satisfied with a draw.

“Ivory Coast’s coach chose experienced players like Serge Aurier so there was potential on their side.

“I am satisfied. The referee was excellent too. He didn’t show any card this afternoon.”
