BRING it on!
That was the message boomed out loud and clear to Danny Jordaan by his challenger Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana who is determined to unseat the former mayor as SA Football Association (Safa) president.
The two heavyweights will battle it out for the hottest seat in Mzansi soccer at the Safa Elective Congress on 24 March.
Nonkonyana, a respected advocate from the Eastern Cape, was axed as vice-president by Safa in 2014, said he wanted to put Safa back on the map as the best run association in Africa, and made Bafana Bafana the number one team in Africa.
“We cannot tolerate mediocrity in Safa administration and with Bafana anymore.”
Nonkonyana was originally suspended in October 2013, following comments he made about then Bafana head coach Gordon Igesund.
He suggested Igesund should be sacked if Bafana did not reach the final of the African Nations Championships (Chan), which was hosted by Mzansi in January 2014.
Bafana failed to get past the first round.
Nonkonyana has taken his dismissal as Safa vice-president to the Southern Gauteng High Court and a ruling is expected on 29 January.
Nonkonyana is ready for any dirty tricks in the run up to the congress: “There is always an element of dirty tricks in South Africa soccer politics. When I go to war I will be going with my warriors well prepared for any process that develops. I’m ready for anything they (Jordaan camp) can throw at me.
“They have already tried to undermine my campaign by saying I’m not eligible to stand. They have also said I owe Safa money, which is total nonsense. The fact is Safa owe me money. But let them throw as much mud as they want, it will not worry me in the least.”
He said the fact that Safa brought forward the elective congress form September to March did not faze him: “I have the backing and support to win. If they said the congress would be held next week I would be ready.”
